Fall is such a favourite season of mine. Not just because of mine and Isabella’s birthdays, but because the leaves on the trees and all the colours are so pretty to me. That being said it’s also a favourite time for Rhinoviruses (aka the common cold) to strike. That typical stuffy nose, headache, and runny eyes that no one enjoys. New research actually suggests that people who feel unable to deal with everyday stresses have an exaggerated immune reaction that may intensify cold or flu symptoms once they’ve contracted a virus. A few ways I allow my body to handle stress better is getting adequate rest (I know all you parents are rolling your eyes 😆), getting in some physical activity, eating a healthy nutrient dense diet, taking self care time to relax (read a book, go for a walk, paint, etc), consuming Adaptogens, as well as CBD oil for an overall healthy body and mind. .
Be sure to stay away from medications such as Aspirin and Tylenol as they suppress the antibodies the body produces to fight cold viruses and increase symptoms such as nasal stuffiness. If you are to take over the counter medications, Motrin, Advil, and Nuprin are more effective as they do not affect immune response. .
Some natural remedies include but aren’t limited to:
Apple cider vinegar
Taking an Epsom salt steam bath
Drinking hot beverages (green tea)
Certain kinds of kombucha
Kadha herbal tea
Lemon Socks for fever
Baking Soda for restoring pH
Grapefruit seed extract
Aside from that, giving your body time, rest, and plenty of fluids can actually be a method to allow your immune system to cure the cold itself 🍁
