@monicabjornstrom told us to check out the free roaming deer at this park and we did! Although it did take a while to walk across to find some as this is the biggest park in Europe! It’s larger than all London parks combined and it’s 2x the size of Central Park in New York 😱 Oh, and I’m currently having major withdrawals...But I’ll be visiting NYC in about one month from now 😊 📸: @toetoes_ (Tony went crazy this day with his camera lol) #ireland#phoenixpark#papalcross#vacation#deer#goldenhour
The Wellington Monument in Phoenix Park. Completed in 1861, it took over 40 years to build. It's 203 feet tall, making it the tallest obelisk in Europe.
Named for Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), the first Duke of Wellington, and former Prime Minister of Great Britain. Wellesley was born in Ireland, but never identified as such, seeing it as a rather inconvenient blot on his otherwise pristine 'British' identity. Daniel O'Connell once famously said (in reference to Wellington's birth), "just because you are born in a stable does not make you a horse". The 'Iron Duke' is most famous for his victory over the forces of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, securing victory for the aristocratic and privileged "anciens régimes" of Europe, over the liberal ideals of the French Republic. Bizarrely, some still regard this victory as one of good over evil!
The obelisk, like the duke himself, is domineering and imposing. Construction continued throughout the length of the Irish Famine (an Gorta Mór), when over a million people are estimated to have died from starvation.
Some hill training this morning on the bike with @dysonthedirewolf and Lady. As you can see from Dyson's face, he was not impressed with the hills! 😂 Lady didn't care, she just ran and pulled anyway!! .
We even ran past some deer and Lady did an amazing job of passing them. She knew they were there, but kept going. We did it twice so I could film it the second time! 🙄
