I love this gothic aesthetic although I don’t often use it. I wish I had some castle walls and wrought iron arches in my garden! Oh well - trees are nice too 😍
#bookqueensoct18 | Dark and Beautiful : Gothic Literature 🖤
While I have read plenty of Gothic Literature, I don’t seem to own any copies of the books ... so here is my pseudo gothic literature offering. I stand by my choice since there would be no story without Catherine Morland’s penchant for gothic novels and her overactive imagination 🖤

“Arram sighed. ‘That’s different, and you know it. I don’t want to be a battle mage, not ever. I don’t want to sweep away a troop of men with a sigil and a snap of my fingers—or a bolt of lightning.’” —Tamora Pierce, Tempests and Slaughter
Hey, friends! It’s a late post today because I am suddenly swamped with work and have been busy at my computer all day. 🙃 I was also struggling to find inspiration for today’s picture. The theme for #octoberbookishgirls is black cat, and I thought about talking about Faithful from Tamora Pierce’s Lioness quartet, but I JUST featured that series. So instead, I thought I would post about my current read, Tempests and Slaughter, since it’s also by Tamora Pierce. I am loving this book. ❤️ I can’t wait to finish it and post a review. 😊
QOTD: How do you mark pages?
AOTD: Normally, if I’m reading a hardcover, I use the inside cover flap to mark my page. If it’s a paperback, I just remember my page number and don’t mark it. Neither of these systems is great. 😬 So I guess what I’m saying is, who are your favorite bookmark sellers?

Are you a cat person, a dog person, or both?
Happy Wednesday, folks! Today's #octoberbookishgirls is #autumncreatures: #blackcat and I need to confess: I thought I'd be in Paris so I wouldn't need to think up how to do this prompt! I don't have any cats and I was a little dismayed to see today's prompt. Luckily, I remembered Erin Hunter's Warrior's series!
Fun fact: I started writing books as a 7-year-old after my mother decided the Warriors Series (wherein they worship stars and ancestors, etc) was too 'pagan' for me. I was frustrated because I LOVED the first book and wanted to read more! So I decided 'write what you want to read' and started writing a book about a band of cats! Admittedly, it was terrible. But I've never stopped writing. So, thanks, Erin Hunter, and thanks, Mom. You both rock.
I was tagged by the gorgeous @thisdreamofmine in the #bookstagrammermostlikely tag! (thanks, Sarah!
-Take up piracy: Honestly I expect @bforbookslut to sail away at any moment.

Happy Tuesday! Only 2 more days til we head to Europe and I cannot wait! I’m really proud of myself because I’m already packed except for makeup and toiletries, which is rare for me. I’m usually a last minute packer!
Today’s #octoberbookishgirls prompt is Candy Corn Ombré, and once again I discovered how few orange and yellow books I have. I’m liking all these fall #photochallenge promots though because they make me think outside the box.

“Go on, have a pasty," said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed, anyone to share it with. It was a nice feeling, sitting there with Ron, eating their way through all Harry's pasties, cakes, and candies (the sandwiches lay forgotten).” - JK Rowling •
Q O T D what’s your favorite Harry Potter treat?
Mine is either pumpkin pasties or butter beer. Both so so good sounding from books. And the homemade ones aren’t bad either.
I made Harry’s birthday cake for my husband last night (see my story for a photo) and pumpkin pasties and a healthy pescatarian dinner. So I only had time to take one photo.
I got to read a bit Friday night but then the rest of my weekend was a whirlwind of activities, I’m so looking forward to tonight. I’m going to curl up with a book and a nice cuppa. What are you doing tonight?

“It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die.” —Maggie Stiefvater, The Scorpio Races
Monday is upon us yet again. I’m enjoying more rain today, which is really nice, but also really distracting when I’m trying to work. ☔️🙈
It’s kind of crazy to think that The Scorpio Races was featured in my third picture on bookstagram, and that that picture was posted only about a month ago. It feels like it’s been wayyy longer since I started this adventure! I’m still trying to figure things out, but I feel like I’ve learned so much already. If nothing else, I’m practically swimming in props now... 🙊
QOTD: How did you discover bookstagram?
AOTD: I first discovered bookstagram while managing the Instagram page for a publishing house I worked at. Soon I started following bookstagram happenings with my personal account, and eventually took the leap and joined in on the fun. I’m so glad I did! 📚

It seems we’re all struggling a little bit with our interaction, but there’s only so much we can do to help ourselves. Anyway, reading update. I read nothing. So about par for the course of things right now. But that’s alright. I’m going to take more pictures today and watch football and maybe even rearrange my bookshelves. That’ll be... a task. We’ll see if it happens. I’ll keep y’all updated.

“Harry twisted his body around and saw a grindylow, a small, horned water demon, poking out of the weed, its long fingers clutched tightly around Harry’s leg, its pointed fangs bared—Harry stuck his webbed hand quickly inside his robes and fumbled for his wand.” —J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Shamelessly posting Goblet of Fire again because I’m still listening to the audiobook and really enjoying it. As far as the movies go, Goblet of Fire is by far my least favorite, so naturally I was a little apprehensive when I reached this point in my reread. My worries were totally misplaced—the book is WAY better than the movie! (Am I surprised? No.)
I’m also happy to report that it’s actually getting cold where I live! It never gets cold this early in the year, so I’m currently basking in the rain and low temperatures and hoping they last forever. Happy Friday to me! ☺️
QOTD: What’s your favorite creature from the Harry Potter world?
AOTD: I really liked Hypogriffs in the original Harry Potter books, but there are also some creatures in Fantastic Beasts that I like a lot. Thunderbirds, Nifflers, and Wampuses (Wampi?) are all things I hope we get to see more of. November can’t come soon enough. 😍

aloha thane thursday, book nerds 🌟 hahahaha @tediously_brief here, stuck in insane traffic in the rain on my way up to concord, ma for my writing retreat. it’s slightly terrifying bc some of the cars are a little weave-y so please pray for & the uber. i don’t want to die today in an uber listening to Christina Ricci listening to Little Women on audible.
QOTD: what has been / is your favorite audio book this year?
i’m honestly really loving this version, the bbc1 radio plays where each character is played by a different actor, when authors read their own books, Harry Potter, ADSOM, Vicious/Vengeful, CMBYN read by Armie Hammer, The Great Gatsby read by Jake Gyllenhaal, The Handmaid’s Tale read by Claire Danes, Ready Player One read by Wil Wheaton. Any Gaiman or King. And Scalzi’s Redshirts read by Wil Wheaton! Honestly, there probably are more. But I gotta get back to focusing on this audiobook. So sorry for the short post!
Also buy and read my current fave graphic novel, Star Wars: Lost Stars by @claudia_gray from @yenpress!
What’s a series/book that you always come back to?
It’s a super late post today because I am SO SLEEPY. 😴 I need to start getting to bed earlier but I always feel like reading before bed no matter how late it is. 🙈
The Song of the Lioness quartet is one of my dearest book loves. This is a series that I’m always thinking about, comparing things too, referencing, rereading, you name it. The books follow Alanna, a girl of noble birth, who has a dream of being a Knight even though it’s an exclusively male profession. There’s lots of magic, combat, and adventure, and a host of well-developed characters. Alanna herself is extremely fiery and stubborn, and it’s easy to root for her throughout the series. 🦁⚔️
This also happens to be one of my favorite cover series that I own. ❤️ I recently discovered that the Immortals quartet used to be printed in a similar cover series, and I’m extremely tempted to buy it...

Who is a side character that you were unsure of at first and then ended up absolutely loving? I’m not gonna lie, I was not a huge Zuzana fan at the beginning of Daughter of Smoke and Bone. She was just too much for me. But hot damn, did she win me over. Maybe it was the chocolate cake obsession, maybe it was the unwavering loyalty to Karou. Either way, Zuzana is definitely a beloved character I found this year.

“Glory be to God for dappled things” —Gerard Manley Hopkins, Pied Beauty
It’s #worldmentalhealthday, so I thought it would be appropriate to feature a poem about the beauty of things that aren’t “perfect”, from a poet who was suspected of dealing with mental illness during his lifetime. I know it’s hard to love ourselves sometimes, but never forget that our differences are the things that make us most beautiful. ❤️
I’ve spent the past 1.5 years going through some really rough times, and while it’s not something that’s easy for me to talk about, looking back on (or forward to) my own challenges reminds how important it is that we all support each other through our struggles. So here’s a reminder for all of us, myself included: Take a moment today to love on yourself, be proud of your progress, and to check on your friends as well. You’re all wonderful people, and I hope everyone has a great day! ☺️

Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day. 💙 I, like many many others, deal with different mental health issues and today is a day to bring awareness to the mental health challenges we all face every day. It’s something we should talk about every day, but today we can all come together to discuss the things we go through and realize you’re not alone. ————-
I think mental illness is becoming more prevalent in fiction, and I believe it’s something we need to see more and more so the people who do deal with these kinds of issues can find someone like them in a book they read. I think we all should be able to find a character we relate to in some sort of way.
I’ll talk a little of my mental health story. I seem like a pretty laid back person. I don’t let a lot get to me, I don’t stay angry at people and I let a lot just roll off of me. But in my mind I’m constantly overthinking, constantly worrying about things that can and will go wrong. Anxiety is not fun. I also deal with what is colloquially called high functioning depression. Like I said, on the outside I’m pretty mellow, laid back. But you can’t tell what people are going through from the outside. There are days I struggle to get out of bed, to get off the couch, to shower, do the dishes, go to work, really anything because I just can’t muster the energy to do so. Sometimes it’s like you’re playing the role of yourself in your own life, and you’re watching it from the outside. It’s exhausting. I’m not saying these things to make you feel sorry for me, it’s something I deal with, but I just wanted to let know that if you’re feeling these things too, you’re not alone. And it’s okay to not feel okay. 💙

Today is also World Health Awareness Day/ World Mental Health Day. It's really important today (and every day tbh) to love and accept love. Be the first one to smile at a stranger. Pay it forward in the Starbucks line. Let your coworkers/ family members/ friends know that you're here for them. Ask "How are you doing" and really listen for the answer. (Alternately, really answer that question honestly when someone asks). You are not in this alone. We are together.
In the spirit of togetherness, I wanted to let you all know that our trip to Paris has been cancelled and I'm really struggling with sadness today. We've been planning this adventure for years, saving up, learning French, studying Google maps, and anticipating the macarons and delicious cuisine we were going to have. We were supposed to leave in three days. Three days until my long-awaited dream vacation. But the doctors say that it would be a bad idea to go. My hubby's hand is doing better than expected but... no, they say. No. Don't go. It's a bad idea. And I'm sitting here this morning, disappointment heavy on my heart. Sure, we might be able to go next year. Sure, it's just a delay. But... There are all sorts of calls to make and travel insurance people to wrangle into getting our money back and... after the fires this summer, and the evacuations... it was the thought of Paris that got us through and I am just sad.

Now, moving on…I chose Boromir for this prompt. Though his change was short lived, he pulled through at the end and fought for what was right. At least, that’s how I remember it from the movies. Heck, I really need to reread the books.
#bookreadhappyhour | Since I am dead, I can take off my head to recite Shakespearean quotations | Look, I’m tying this prompt to Sean Bean (who played Boromir in the Fellowship movie) because that man always plays characters who die.
#bookqueensoct18 | #tolkientuesday | Hey look, Tolkien books!
#bookstawarriorsoct18 | Favorite cute, sweet contemporaries | Okay, I am legit using this prompt just so I can throw some dark aesthetic into the cuteness of today MWAHAHAHAHAHA! (for mine is an evil laugh)

“You have to decide for yourself. It is you who must live with the outcome.” -Dhonielle Clayton, The Belles
Happy Tuesday! What is a book that wasn’t what you expected? I read The Belles last month and I’ll admit that this is one that I picked up because of bookstagram. There are so many photos of this gorgeous cover that I had to read it. However, it took me a long time to finish because the beginning was too focused on descriptions rather than the story and I got bored. It seemed so many enjoyed this book so I pushed on longer than I normally would have. I’d say it was worth it because eventually the action picked up and I connected more with Camellia. Now I’d really like to read the next book in this series. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A very special thank you to @bellesheartsncrafts for designing this stunning candle holder for me ☺️❤️ I’ve never had a work of art created that was inspired by me!!! Especially by someone who’s crafts I’ve admired for so long!!! ✨
I don’t think I’ll EVER get over how much I LOVE this. I cannot stop looking at it and picking it up! 😍💖 the Potterific quote, the Hogwarts castle wood grain, EVERYTHING about this makes my heart so happy. ☺️💗💗💗 She carved it from Holly (the same as Harry’s wand!) and also included a mini maple wood wand which blows my mind because that is my official wand!!!! 😍 Coincidence?! I think not. ✨
There’s so much heart and elegance in Belle’s creations — not only is she an extremely talented woodworker and artist (check out her insta!) 😍 but she’s also a stand up gal! Thank you thank you thank you~! 💫💞
🌟🌈 This is the perfect time to take a moment to share more love and positivity with you, friends! I’ve connected closely with so many of you and found my life made brighter and more beautiful because of it. I can’t imagine a time before insta and before our friendship and fangirling ☺️ You all know who you are. I can’t thank you enough for everything you do & have done. Here’s to many more years of friendship 🤗🌈✨

What is one of your favorite movies? (That ISN’T Harry Potter) I’ve been thinking a lot about movie I was into a few years ago and John Wick and The Martian take the favorites for that era. I could watch both on repeat (although I always fast forward one particular scene in John Wick….if you’ve seen it you KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT)
#somethingstrangeoct18 | AV Club: If you like this movie, read this book | If you like Firefly (TV Show) and its movie, Serenity, you should definitely read Shadow Run and/or Illuminae. Shadow Run has a rag tag crew of misfits and criminals, a pilot who is one heck of a leaf on the wind, mysterious government experiments, and some darn good banter. Illuminae, well…Illuminae has the Afflicted which gave me SERIOUS Reaver vibes AND the snark/banter is top notch. Firefly is my favorite Sci Fi show/movie and these books are two of my top Sci Fi books. I 100% recommend all of them.
#bookreadhappyhour | Things that go bump in the night…| While I highly recommend reading Illuminae, I definitely do not recommend reading it at night.
#bookqueensoct18 | Uncharted Territories: #mapmonday | I love all the maps and schematics in the Illuminae Files.
#wildadventuresoct | Favorite bookish criminals | Oh, there are some good criminals in these books.
#bookstawarriorsoct18 | Favorite kickass characters | Also, lots of good kickass characters in these books.
#octoberbookishgirls | cozy reads | These might not be your typical cozy reads for most, but they are for me. I love good sci fi!
#clutteredpagesoctober | Ominous | Read Illuminae and try to tell me that the build up to the Afflicted isn’t ominous AF
