Yesterday I run my longest run 3 weeks off @maratona_ravenna 38km in 2h43 with almost 500 m+. I chose to run in the forest as the main goal of this workout was to improve my endurance. It felt incredibly easy. It was also the good occasion to test gels and fluids. The hardest part is done. Now it's just a matter of hitting a couple of key workouts (MP pace) and try to stay healthy and strong. AD MAIORA!!
From 5km to Marathon in 5 months and I couldn't be more chuffed 😀
The last few weeks have definitely thrown me a few hurdles (knee pain, tummy bug and a badly planned long shift the day before) BUT it all came together on the day!
I realized 3 km in that my legs felt really good plus my breathing was super steady and I think that really helped me feel positive from the get go!
At 12km my knee started to niggle but I still felt strong and given past long run experience knew the real pain wouldn't start until later on.
I had downloaded the Amsterdam marathon app before the race and was sporadically tracking how @freekvdwst
was doing. It was a good distraction, and kept me preoccupied doing mental arithmetic trying to predict his finish time 😂
I was super happy at halfway and had only a slight wobble at 25km when I realized how far there was left.
At 35km the 4.20 pace group came up behind me, this was great motivation and I kept up with them for 3 kms going dramatically faster then I had been before.
The final few kilometres were a blur I just remember being so happy, from 40.5km onwards I must have grinned the whole way to the finish line.
Although I don't feel like I hit "the wall" my legs and knees were in a world of pain by the end and I was ecstatic to finish.
I'm so happy with my time and the experience overall and super proud of myself and @freekvdwst who smashed sub 4 hours.
My training program kicked off this morning with... YOGA🧘♀️. Between yesterday’s race and a baby alarm clock that got me up earlier than hoped, a gentler introduction into marathon training is what I needed. Admittedly, I am one of the least flexible people you will ever meet, but it felt really good to focus on breathing and stretching out muscles that sorely missed my attention. Can’t wait to work with @mamabear_runs_marathons and the Strong Finish Run Coaching team.

I certainly lived that philosophy preparing for #GCM18 and such was my confidence that I'll run my personal best with 5 weeks to race day that the only question was how much my improvement would be. My mental conditioning was rock solid and thus I was able to exploit whatever fitness the Hansons Marathon Method had brought on physically.
In 7 weeks' time, I'll be toeing the line of another marathon. I've no expectations going into this one. The plan is a much more aggressive one (more suited to prepping for a BQ) this time and I believe I need another year of consistent development before being able to physically and mentally take what this plan dishes out. As a result, I've found that I needed more recovery than usual. To ensure I don't go over the edge, I've taken the odd day off every now and then just so I don't end up injured or burn out.
Yet, I find myself running faster these days and that makes me curious about what's possible come December. I'm fully prepared to commit to the cause on race day yet willing to accept it as a learning experience in the event I mess up.
Interesting times indeed!
Shoutout to the seagull who made this #medalmonday shot 10x better 📸🏅
Another European race in the bag although that’ll *probably* be it for 2018. Time to start planning for 2019 🗓 where next? 🤔
I know we speak a lot about comparison and how harmful it is to us but I can’t help comparing the two medals! This years is so much better!!! After not running a road marathon since April I’m kinda itching to sign up for one and hit the tarmac and try to beat my marathon on of 3:45. Has anyone done Southampton Marathon?
