Aislinn Clarke - The Devil's Doorway (2018)
An Irish "found footage" horror film, set in a Magdalene Laundry in 1960 as two priests go there to investigate a reported miracle which involves a weeping statue of the Virgin Mary. As a premisse this is actually pretty good, a good way to explore the horror of the laundries, the treatment of women, Catholic mythology and repressed feelings, all of that.
Unfortunately the film gets slightly lost as is goes along. The acting is generally pretty good, particularly the character of father Thomas, the skeptic who looks convincingly flabbergasted when things take a turn towards the undeniably supernatural. The head nun is also appropriately harsh and creepy. The problem with the film is the way in which after a while action takes over character and plot development ending up serving us nothing more than what we've already had so many times in similar kinds of movies.
The film is quite short, under 80 minutes, as such I could really have done with a lot less shaky camera running around dark corridors with a flickering light and spooky music setting up the next jump scare, which never really lands. It probably never really lands as most of the "ghost" children just look like the "I like turtles" boy (Google it). What could have been an interesting, well acted, exploration of an interesting subject with a lot of horror potential, gets lost in dull run-of-the-mill action sequences which make the whole experience unsatisfying. (2/5)

The vote is in. And the sale of the last mother and baby home that the state owns, has been stopped.
The idea was to sell it on to a Japanese hotel chain. Tonight I stood with abuse survivors protesting this sale.
As one survivor put it " we earned that building through the abuse, blood, sweat and tears that we were put through and it is not the state's to sell"
There is suggestions that in its place memorial be set up, so that the abuse that was covered up for so long will not be forgotten or repeated.

"I was an unmarried girl
I'd just turned twenty-seven
When they sent me to the sisters
For the way men looked at me
Branded as a jezebel
I knew I was not bound for Heaven
I'd be cast in shame
Into the Magdalene laundries
Most girls come here pregnant
Some by their own fathers
Bridget got that belly
By her parish priest
We're trying to get things white as snow
All of us woe-begotten-daughters
In the steaming stains
Of the Magdalene laundries
Prostitutes and destitutes
And temptresses like me
Sentenced into dreamless drudgery."
Joni Mitchell - The Magdalene Laundries
The Magdalene Laundries in Ireland, also known as Magdalene asylums, were institutions of confinement, usually run by Roman Catholic orders, which operated from the 18th to the late 20th centuries. They were run ostensibly to house "fallen women", an estimated 30,000 of whom were confined in these institutions in Ireland. In 1993, a mass grave containing 155 corpses was uncovered in the convent grounds of one of the laundries.
In the late 18th century, the term "fallen women" primarily referred to prostitutes, but by the end of the 19th century, Magdalene laundries were filled with many different kinds of women, including girls who were "not prostitutes at all", but either "seduced women" or women who had yet to engage in sexual activity.
I wanted to shoot these images in remembrance of the women who suffered and are still suffering due to corrupt 'religious' systems and disgusting sexism and predjudice.
Thanks to these incredible women :

Really tough to see this former #MagdaleneLaundry today. Just walking up to it, I felt all the hairs of my body stand up. Then I saw the little baby shoes, the children ripped away from their mothers by this cruel and sadistic establishment. The place not only feels like a prison, it actually was one and shockingly it was still open until 1997. Never must this be allowed to be forgotten.... #magdalenelaundries #Dublin

Well that was the most bizarre weekend of my career, I absolutely respect those who have faith in god and I understand the need for that faith, a lot of us have wounds that need healing and the Church provides that for many, I am not slamming religion, however I think the male dominated Vatican is an oppressive, outdated institution based on greed and power. There are thousands of people sleeping on our streets every night, there are millions across the globe in dire straits, yet the Catholic Church still has a hold over the most vulnerable. 30 million Euro is the estimated cost of Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland, that is sickening to me, blind faith is not the right faith. The man is noted for his humility and seems to be a decent human being who has done a great deal of good in his lifetime but his apology to those who were raped and broken by the Church and those in charge is not enough. It’s too little too late. He should have been taken from the airport to Tuam and then back to the airport, the rest was all pomp and ceremony. I don’t intend to attend another Catholic mass in my lifetime. I genuinely hope that ticket-holders felt it was worth the pilgrimage and that they felt uplifted, after all that’s what it is all about. These are just my opinions, let’s all just get along, we are all after the same thing after all. Love. Powerful day of solidarity and hope, with my beautiful friends at #stand4truth
Incredible contributions from Grace Dyas and Marion Keynes, Hozier, Mary Black, Mary coughlan, Brian Kennedy and the Villagers. And #colmogorman leading a silent march of thousands, walking to the last #magdalenelaundries
Just incredible ♥️
#stand4truth #saynopetothepope protest today against the horrific wrongs inflicted on our country by the organization of which francis is leader. Amongst the amazing performers was the wonderful @hozier afterward we marched silently to the last remaining Magdalene Laundries which closed in 1996. For those not in the know these “mother and baby” homes were concentration camps where parents were shamed into donating their pregnant daughters to be enslaved and abused and their grandchildren trafficked to rich American Catholics. Hundreds of the babies ended up in unmarked graves, many in septic tanks. #magdalenelaundries #motherbabyhome thank you to my amazing and talented cousin @suz.walsh for marching with us, and Joanne too 😘 #standfortruth #truthjusticelove
We ended our #Stand4Truth protest earlier by silently walking down towards Ireland’s last Magdalene Laundry, which only closed down in 1996. It was an extremely emotional but powerful day; all thanks to the incredible @colmogorman. This is a new Ireland. This weekend only solidifies that. We do not - and will not - live in a country controlled by such an abusive and untrustworthy religious organisation. ❤️ #NopeToThePope #PopeInIreland #MagdaleneLaundries #TruthJusticeLove
