Although one of the landmarks of Kiev and a masterpiece of the Ukrainian baroque (originally built in the 12th century), Soviet authorities did not consider Saint Michael's Monastery worth of preservation and mandated its demolition, completed throughout the mid-1930s. The construction currently standing was erected in 1999. Quite an outstanding restoration.
