Birmingham, unlike many major cities around the globe, is unusual in that it is not centred around a major river of any sort, and stands at a relatively high elevation above sea level, standing at around 150-300 metres in different parts of the city. This left engineers with two difficult problems. How could goods come in and out of the city without a river, and how could this huge plateau be climbed. The answer came in the form of the canals, and the bad lock systems which accompanied them. Pictures are the farmers bridge lock flight, containing 13 locks, bringing the canal up a steep incline to the city centre. Nowadays, the canal sits in a deep canyon between the housing developments pictured, though it is still in regular use for canal tourists. #thecitybeautiful100#history#heritage
