Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, is pregnant and everyone is losing it because she’s ‘too old to safely carry a baby to term’🤦🏼♀️Where and how did this misconception about women running out of time in their 30’s, begin? At the turn of the 1800s U.K. and French women bore their final child averaging at age 42. In Australia in the 1900s? Mid-forties! Statistics are easy to find online.
Since 1990, the conception rate for women aged 35-39 years and 40+ has more than doubled. One reason is due to career demands etc. however it has also been found that because women are falsely led to believe that once your 30’s are up it’s almost impossible to become a mother, they stop using contraception. Is it harder? Yes: hard-ER, I don’t dare suggest its ever easy whatever your age.
By the way, in 2016, 42% of IVF patients were UNDER 35. 23% aged 35–37, 14% aged 38–39, 14% aged 40–42 and 4% aged 43–44. Next thing, people will be saying this is some sort of proof you have to have them before 30 🤦🏼♀️ Infertility is a growing problem amongst all age groups and ahem - AMONGST MEN TOO! This is not just a female problem! Male infertility accounts for over 30% of current U.K. statistics. Lifestyle and environmental factors have undoubtedly affected our ability to conceive, but if this was purely about age, the stats would be different.
Is it a safe? There is a higher risk of Down’s syndrome and other concerns such as pregnancy related diabetes etc. to the mother however, in a 2015 study they found “a positive association between older maternal age and greater odds of the mother surviving to unusually old age”. So... which way do we go? There are risks and advantages at every age. If you want kids before a certain age because you feel late motherhood is not for you and this suits you, then this a personal choice-rightly and justly so.
Please research to find the right information because we won’t find them in the media - even in most female magazines. Queen Elizabeth gave birth to Prince Edward age 38, Sophie Wessex dared to assume she could give birth to James, Viscount Severn aged 42 and in case anyone is just dying to know, I always hoped to be a mother at 40✌🏼
