Intermittent Fasting is trendy right now in the fitness world but what is it? Is it safe? Should you be doing it?
Initially, “fasting” sounds scary. It sounds like you’ll be torturing yourself but it doesn’t have be like that! There are methods of fasting that recommend day(s)without eating but for most of us food is a social connection with friends and family and this isn’t realistic.🙅🏻♀️This is why I recommend starting with a 12 hr fast and working up to 16. To simplify, you eat for 8-12 hrs a day instead of from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. An easy way to have an 8 hour eating window is to skip breakfast, make lunch your first meal & stop eating around 8PM. Of course there are exceptions like if you work a wonky schedule, your times would be adjusted. If you have medications that must be taken at a certain time with food you need to stick to that eating window. If you have a history of disordered eating, stick with what you’ve established as a healthy routine. If you don’t perform your workouts well without eating, adjust your window and eat before your workout!! Is this safe? As with any new program, check with your doc!! For most people, this eating style is healthy and safe. You give your body a chance to promote cell repair & “maintenance “ as it isn’t working on digestion and can focus on other tasks. You’ll reset your hunger cues, after 1-2 weeks you’ll no longer feel hungry at the times you’re used to eating. You’ll start to realize how much you have been eating out of habit rather than need. Another perk of fasting could be fat loss! Your body will use up all of the glucose (energy converted from food you ate) and tap into your fat for fuel.▫️I follow a 17-18 hour fast most days eating from 2 PM to 8PM but I’m closer to a 12 hour window on Sundays because we usually eat breakfast as a family. For me, participating in that time with family is important, so I do it. Fasting doesn’t have to be stressful. Do what works for you. Think of it more as being mindful of how many hours you’re stuffing food in your face each day. The longer you eat, you’ll have more opportunity to OVER eat. Have you tried fasting? What works for you?
