It’s time for Seamore, the Red-eared Slider, to head inside for the winter!
In the wild, certain water turtles can survive freezing temperatures in ponds completely covered in ice. So how do they breathe??? 🤔
These amazing reptiles can absorb oxygen through their skin, mouth, and even butts. That’s right, by breathing through their butts these creatures can survive throughout the winter!
Red-eared Sliders (like Seamore) can and do survive the winters. With that said, I’ve never risked keeping him outside in his pond during the winter. His pond is only a few feet deep and there is a possibility he wouldn’t survive. So for the last 15 years, Seamore takes a warm, winter vacation in the animal house! 🌴🐢
