Death in the Pot: The Impact of Food Poisoning on History by Morton Satin
Hardcover book published by Prometheus Books 2007, 258 pages with a few black and white illustrations and photographs.
In 2005, the Argonne National Laboratory proved that the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven died prematurely from lead poisoning. This is just one example of how poisoning, both natural and deliberate, has affected the course of history. Battles have been lost or won - as internationally renowned food expert Morton Satin shows - because of unclean, adulterated food. In this engrossing narrative, Satin spans the ancient world to the present day, documenting events both tragic and bizarre through the ages. In the fifth century B.C.E., the great plague of Athens, probably caused by contaminated cereals, led to the defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. In the pre-scientific Middle Ages, illnesses resulting from contaminated food were often attributed to the wrath of God or malevolent spirits. Heavily infectious ergot induced a spasmodic muscle condition, which the Church named St. Anthony's Fire and interpreted as retribution by God on heretics. Similarly, in seventeenth-century America the hallucinogenic symptoms of mouldy grain were thought by Puritans to be signs of witchcraft. Even the madness of King George III, which played a role in the American Revolution, may have been induced by accidental arsenic poisoning. In the twentieth century, Satin recounts the efforts of modern industrial societies to make food safer; in some cases these efforts were heroic. $14.50 + postage #hgnew#bookstagram#instabook#rarebooks#bookporn#bookseller#vintagebooks#oldbooks#antiquarianbooks#antiquebooks#buylocalclunes#booklover#books#book#bibliophile#Clunes#Clunesvictoria#booktown#Ballarat#Daylesford#booksforsale#shelfie#booksofinstagram#bookcollector#poison
Day four of creation… "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and LET THEM BE for SIGNS, and for seasons, and for days, and years".
Here is a direct instruction right in the beginning of the Bible where God clearly instructs us that we MUST study the signs in the stars, moon and sun.
David adds to this in Psalm 19 and says that STUDYING THEM would give you "knowledge". This means the heavens are broadcasting information and revealing knowledge every day and night. This is much more than Astronomy. Astronomy is the scientific study of the start. Astrology is EVIL and forbidden in the Bible. Astronomy and Astrology must not be confused with each other.
Thus the heavens speak special knowledge with pictures, signs, and symbols. They are God’s silent witnesses and declare His glory!
God asks Job: "Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion? Can you lead forth the MAZZAROTH in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth?" The "Mazzaroth" is the Hebrew word for the 12 constellations and they are connected to the 12 Tribes of Israel.
If fact Paul himself, quote David’s words of Psalm 19 which proves undoubtedly that the Mazzaroth was designed by God as a means of "communicating astonishing messages".
Beloved Christian, the stars aren't evil. God created the heavenly bodies for signs, timing and special spiritual knowledge for you. The stars announced the Messiah’s First Coming and they will do so again at His Second Coming!
When the correct definitions of the signs of the Mazzaroth and the planets are used, the Heavens SUDDENLY comes alive with the glory of God.
Finished up DEAD RINGER by Kate Kessler last night. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very compelling; I literally didn’t want to put this down because I had to know where the plot was going.
The writing didn’t blow me away. But I think the intense suspense makes up for it. I’m still on the fence overall - I liked the book. It held my attention. But it could have been less predictable. I knew pretty much the whole time what was going on. It didn’t make the book any less enjoyable, but it’s worth noting.
"Lui fece un salto. Ma letteralmente. Saltò come se dalla mia mano fosse passata una scarica elettrica." Chissà se Ragazze elettriche è nato da questa frase di Disobbedienza di Naomi Alderman, con una nuovissima copertina, da Nottetempo
The book that launched my love of mysteries. I’ve read nearly all “The Cat Who” books. We just brought in BOXES & BOXES of mystery books. Whodunnit? It’s a mystery! 🤷♀️ Mass Market paperbacks 5/$1 thru Thursday.
LEARNING TO COPE.
How do you teach your children to deal with emotions that usually come up through interactions with others? Talk it through, lash out or calm down? My son is always so quiet when he's outside and there have been situations I felt like encouraging him to lash out but he walked away ☹. I guess he's like his daddy 😃. What do you teach your children?
I have a witchy manga read for you all today.
Akko is everything I love in a main character; she is true to her beliefs, brave in the face of bullies, and so very determined to be the best she can be!
My favourite character is Sucy! I love her mischievous ways, and her love of poisons and mushrooms. Lotte reminds me a lot of me though.
I watched this anime before reading the manga, but I would suggest reading before watching this one.
QOTD: Do you read first, or watch first?
AOTD: I flip flop. Sometimes I read it first, sometimes I watch it first.
