I’m going to try a new thing on my IG. I read a lot and I love talking about the books I read. So here is my first honest review. I hope to do these once a week or every two weeks we shall see. I bought this book because I love all of Gregory Maguire’s books that I’ve read; Wicked, Mirror Mirror, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, Lost, and Out of Oz. I was thrilled when I saw After Alice as I am a huge fan of Alice and Wonderland. To my dismay this book was incredibly difficult to read. Each chapter flips from being told by a different character which took some time to get used to. Especially at the beginning when there was no indication that this was happening. The story is told from the perspectives of Ada, a little girl with a spine deformity who is friends with Alice. As well as, Lydia who is Alice’s older sister and a self righteous snob. The last person is Siam. Siam was my favorite character out of the book and the only one who seemed to have any depth to him. He was a former slave who escaped via the Underground Railroad and ended up in London with a young American man, Mr. Winter. I honestly would have liked to have read a story about Siam rather than this book. I feel like it did not flow well, there were way too many side stories that didn’t really add to the main plot and just eh. So, if you’re a huge Maguire fan like I am... this is not one of the best. I have two more of Maguire’s books on my shelf and I really hope they are better. Have you read this book? Do you share the same thoughts?
