Generally, it is not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence, and CDC does not recommend routine sampling for molds. Current evidence indicates that allergies are the type of diseases most often associated with molds. Since the susceptibility of individuals can vary greatly either because of the amount or type of mold, sampling and culturing are not reliable in determining your health risk. If you are susceptible to mold and mold is seen or smelled, there is a potential health risk; therefore, no matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for its removal. Furthermore, reliable sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable or tolerable quantity of mold have not been established.

Along with the colder weather, comes closing the windows you had open all summer for that amazing fresh air. In place of the fresh air, most people like to burn candles to keep their homes smelling nice. Fire Safety with candles is very important! Candles are beautiful and smell amazing, but it is an open flame, and if not monitored properly can lead to a fire in your home. In fact, accidental candle fires account for approximately four percent of all U.S. residential fires. Studies have shown that 85 percent of candle fires could be avoided if consumers followed three basic safety rules:
1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
2. Never burn a candle on or near anything flammable.
3. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
There are also other options besides candles to keep your home smelling nice. Potpourri and Eucalyptus are good alternatives that can also look pretty. There are candle warmers, which you plug in and place a larger candle on top of the warm surface and it just melts it instead of burning it. And a more recent addition to these alternatives is the essential oils diffuser, which works like a humidifier with water and a few drops of your favorite scented oil.

Keeping in tone with Fire Prevention and the oncoming cold weather. Lets talk about baseboard heaters. They work great to heat your homes, and much like space heaters you can heat just the room you're in. However, they sit off for months during warmer weather. During the off months they're collecting dust, dirt, and if you have pets, lots and lots of fur, even if you have covers. So before turning them on you want to check them and clean them thoroughly to prevent fire.
There is a great article from TheSpruce.com on how to clean your baseboard heaters and they even have tips on how to try to prevent the dirt, dust and fur from finding it's way in.
From us at ServiceMaster of Salem to you and your families, stay warm this winter.

It is National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7th - 13th, and we'll be sharing some tips to prevent fire this week.
The weather has suddenly turned cold rather early, in several places around the country we are already seeing snow this week. Some people like to use space heaters instead of running the heat built into their home. It saves money by only heating the area you're in at the time. It's definitely a budget smart idea.
These small heaters can cause fires if left unattended or knocked over. In recent years they have started manufacturing them with a "safety button", located on the bottom of the heater. When the heater is upright the button is pressed in, and should the heater get knocked over the button pops out and acts as a kill switch turning the heater off to prevent fire. This feature is built into all kinds of space heaters in a variety of sizes and types to fit your needs.
We would just recommend checking all of your space heaters for that feature, and replacing any that are old enough to not have it. Stay warm and safe this winter! #nationalfirepreventionweek #firepreventiontips #damagerestoration #restorationservices #restoration #servicemasterrestore #spaceheater #spaceheatersafety
Posted @withrepost • @dt.belleville “Mark Turner is a familiar face in #downtownbelleville. He can usually be found on the top of a scissor lift, working on restoring many of the downtown buildings to their original splendour. I caught up with Mark yesterday morning and he showed me this gem that was found inside a building he’s working on. If you look closely you can see what appears to be gold leaf on the edges of some of the letters. Look for it in the coming weeks as it’s going to be restored to its original position above the storefront”
